KOLKATA: When we type www.google.co.in, the computer doesn’t recognize the letters. It takes a Domain Name System (DNS) to convert them into internet protocol addresses (IP Adresses) such as 173.194.112.184 or 74.125.29.94. This is only half the job done.

Something called a ‘root server node’ then provides the pointer to the server for top-level domains such as .com, .org or .co.in. There are 13 lots of DNS root server nodes across the world, identified by the letters A through M and operated by 12 independent organisations. Till recently, India had two nodes of the F and J categories at Chennai and Bengaluru but there were none in the eastern region. Now, the first one in the L category has been installed at Kolkata.
